Bunesliga Opta Facts - Matchday 1 - August 9th-11th 2013


Bayern Munich - Borussia Monchengladbach
Bayern have won only one of their last four Bundesliga meetings with Borussia Monchengladbach (D1 L2).
The last two seasons to begin with a defeat for Bayern were during the 2011/12 and 2001/02 campaigns, both losses came against Monchengladbach (each ending 1-0).
Bayern collected 91 points in 2012/13 which set a new Bundesliga record. The old record was 81 points set by Borussia Dortmund in 2011/12.
The difference between Bayern Munich (1st) and Borussia Dortmund (2nd) at the end of the last season was 25 points, the biggest gulf in Bundesliga history.
Monchengladbach were the only side to score first in both league meetings against Bayern Munich during last season.
The last three teams who won on matchday one against the respective German champions could not finish the (respective) season higher than 14th in the table.
Bayern haven't lost any of their last 25 Bundesliga games (W21 D4); their current club record is 27 unbeaten games (May 1988 - March 1989).
Bayern set up a new club record with their 4-3 victory over Monchengladbach on matchday 34; they have now scored in each of their last 37 Bundesliga games.

Hoffenheim have won four of their eight Bundesliga duels against Nurnberg (D2 L2).
The last three Bundesliga duels between these sides have seen 14 goals in total.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen - SC Freiburg
Leverkusen have won seven of their last ten duels against Freiburg (D2 L1). Their first home game in 2012/13 also came against Freiburg, Levekusen won the game 2-0.
Freiburg's 2-0 victory at Leverkusen in March 2012 resulted in the sacking of Robin Dutt as Leverkusen's head coach. Leverkusen have lost only twice at home since (Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund).
Freiburg enter their fifth consecutive Bundesliga campaign; this is a new club record.
Freiburg haven't won an opening match in the Bundesliga in twelve years. Their last victory on the first matchday came in 2001/02 against Bremen (3-0).

Freiburg kept 13 clean sheets in 2012/13; this matched the previous club record (set in 2000/01).
Former Liverpool player Sami Hyypiä is one of three new head coaches in the Bundesliga (along with Pep Guardiola/Bayern and Robin Dutt/Bremen). Hyypiä is the third foreign head coach in Leverkusen's Bundesliga history (the other two were Dragoslav Stepanovic and Rinus Michels).
Stefan Kießling has scored in each of his last six Bundesliga games. Never has a Leverkusen player scored in seven consecutive Bundesliga games.
Heung-Min Son moved from Hamburg to Leverkusen for €10m this summer. He is the most expensive acquisition in the club's history after Andre Schürrle (€14.5m). Schürrle recently moved to Chelsea for €22m, the most the club have ever sold a player for.

Hannover 96 - VFL Wolfsburg
Hannover have won their last three duels against Wolfsburg.
Wolfsburg are unbeaten in their last ten Bundesliga games (W3 D7). Their last defeat came against Schalke in March (4-1). Their club record is eleven unbeaten games in a row (2008/09, when they won the Bundesliga).
In 2012/13, Hannover collected 71% of their points at home (32 of 45), this is highest proportion of all sides last season.
Wolfsburg collected 26 points on the road last season (like Leverkusen); only Bayern Munich (47) and Borussia Dortmund (33) picked up more.
Wolfsburg collected a league high 15 points after falling behind last season.
Hannover finished on 9th last season and in doing so have finished among the top nine in each of their last three seasons.
Wolfsburg's Dieter Hecking hasn't lost any of his last ten Bundesliga games; this is a new personal record for the coach.
Hecking was coach at Hannover between September 2006 - August 2009. He has lost each of his last five meetings with his former side (L4 as Nurnberg coach, L1 as Wolfsburg coach).
Diego made his first Bundesliga appearance against Hannover in August 2006 (with Werder Bremen), scoring one goal and collecting two assists. He scored four goals and assisted another five in his nine Bundesliga games against Hannover.
Wolfsburg's Makoto Hasebe will miss the game due to a red card.

FC Augsburg - Borussia Dortmund
Augsburg and Dortmund will meet for the fifth time in a competitive match. Dortmund have won three of their four meetings; with Borussia netting 11 times. Augsburg managed just three during the same period.
Augsburg will play their third Bundesliga campaign; they have always started the season with a home game. They haven't won any of them (D1 L1).
Dortmund have not won any of their last three Bundesliga games (D2 L1). Four consecutive Bundesliga games without a Dortmund victory last came in 2009 (6 consecutive games without victory between August and September of that year).
Augsburg have not drawn any of their last 13 Bundesliga games; more than any other side currently.
Dortmund have scored in each of their last 21 Bundesliga games; only two other sides have had such a run in Bundesliga history.
The last Bundesliga away game without a Dortmund goal came in March 2012; a goalless draw at Augsburg.
Robert Lewandowski scored his only Bundesliga hat trick on 1st October 2011, when Dortmund won 4-0 against Augsburg. He also assisted one goal in that game.
No player has scored as many goals in the Bundesliga against Augsburg as Robert Lewandowski; who has scored six in his four meetings with Augsburg.

Hertha BSC Berlin - Eintracht Frankfurt
Berlin have won eleven of their last 14 home games against Frankfurt (L3).
Frankfurt won their last duel at Berlin (3-1, November 2009).
Against no other club have Berlin won as many Bundesliga games as against Berlin (24 in 50 matches).
Against no other club have Berlin scored more Bundesliga goals than against Frankfurt (86).
Hertha finished 1st in the second division. Every season where Berlin have finished top of the second division has resulted in their immediate relegation one year later in the Bundesliga.
Berlin collected 76 points last season; more than any other side in the history of the second division (only seasons with 34 matchdays).
Frankfurt were inside the top six in the table during the entire 2012/13 campaign; only Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich also achieved this feat.

Eintracht Braunschweig - Werder Bremen
Braunschweig have lost their last seven competitive meetings with Bremen - with a goal difference of 2-21.
Braunschweig's last Bundesliga victory against Bremen came in October 1982 (3-1 at home).
Against no side have Braunschweig lost as many Bundesliga games as against Bremen (7).
Braunschweig haven't played in the top flight for exactly 10,290 days. Their last Bundesliga match took place on June 8th 1985 (0-1 against Bayern Munich).
Braunschweig have always won their opening game of a season since Torsten Lieberknecht was appointed as their coach (five years - five victories in opening games).
Bremen haven't won any of their last four Bundesliga ‘primetime' games (i.e. the Saturday evening game), collecting only one of 12 possible points from these matches (goal difference: 2-13).

1. FSV Mainz 05 - VFB Stuttgart
Their last meeting, which took place on matchday 34 last season, resulted in a 2-2 draw.
Ede and Nicolai Müller scored for Mainz, Boka and Wetklo (OG) for Stuttgart.
Stuttgart have won seven of their 14 Bundesliga meetings with Mainz (D4 L3).
Mainz haven't lost any of their last five home games against Stuttgart (W3 D2).
Mainz haven't lost any of their last five opening matches of a Bundesliga season, including a 2-0 victory over Stuttgart on MD1 in 2010/11.
Bayern Munich were the only BL side to play more competitive games last season (54) than Stuttgart (52, like Dortmund). In 2013/14 Stuttgart will again play in the Europa League qualification stages, thus giving them more competitive matches at the beginning of the season than any other Bundesliga side.
Mainz haven't won any of their last nine Bundesliga games (L4 D5). A longer run without Bundesliga victory for Mainz last came between August and December 2006 (16 winless games).

Montpellier - Paris SG
The Ligue 1 title holder has failed to win on Matchday 1 in each of the last three seasons.
PSG are unbeaten in their last six encounters against Montpellier in Ligue 1 (W2, D4).
PSG have scored in each of their last 12 games against Montpellier in Ligue 1.
Montpellier have only lost one of their last 15 home games in Ligue 1 (W11, D3).
PSG have won their last five Ligue 1 games away from home; the best current run and best run in their club history.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been involved in four of PSG's last six goals in competitive matches (two goals, two assists).
